All Good Things Are Wild and Free Tote
By Gwendolyn | March 20, 2012
This DIY tote makes a big statement. Try one for yourself today! I’m using mine as gift bags for my bridesmaids! {It’s just too cute not to post, even if it ruins the surprise…}
For this project you will need contact paper, fabric paint, a paint brush you can ruin, a blank tote bag, a pen knife, and a cutting mat or other surface to protect your worktable.
Step one: Roll out your contact paper and cut it to the size you want to cover with your stencil. Secure the paper to the cutting mat, plastic side up. Either freehand cut, or draw your image onto the contact paper. Cut around your image with your pen knife. {This part was pretty time consuming, but oh so worth it when I saw the results.}
Step two: Apply the stencil to the tote bag. (I inserted my cutting mat into the bag as a backing so that the paint wouldn’t bleed through the layers). Here is a picture of the stencil after a few prints.
Step three: Apply fabric paint to the stencil. This can be a little trickier than it looks. Make sure to buy a lot of paint and to use a paint brush. It also gets pretty messy (hence my not having a picture).
Step four: Carefully peel away your stencil and preserve it for the next use. let your tote dry for a few hours and take it for a test drive! Here’s future hubby modeling mine!
